ISTEK Acıbadem is welcoming world renowned authors. ISTEK stresses and values the importance of connecting themselves and their students in a globalized world today more than ever. On Monday, November 1, ISTEK ACIBADEM ILKOGRETIM OKULU opened their doors to Fanny Joly; a famous children’s writer and illustrator.
Fanny Joly, was born in 1954 into a family of 8 children. In 1973, Fanny began her professional career as an advertising copywriter. From there she went onto write plays and screenplays for film and television. By 1980, she became a mother and naturally began writing to target a young audience. Only six years later, Joly published her first book. Since then, she hasn’t looked back. She has now written over 200 books, which have been translated into over 20 languages. Two of her book series have been even been adapted into TV cartoons. Can you say success?
Monday’s presentation at ISTEK ACIBADEM was a huge success. Students from grades 2-5 eagerly gathered into the conference hall to take part in Fanny Joly’s enthusiastic and mind-blowing depiction into the life of a children’s story writer. She began by asking the simple question, “Who enjoys reading?” As hands shot up from all corners of the conference hall, Fanny’s face light up with joy. To see that at such a young age, children are energized about reading really makes you realize how impressionable children are.
Joly shared with the students interesting facts and knowledge about the writing process and what it takes in order to publish a book from start to finish. At one point, one of Joly’s team members entered into the conference hall aisle to show the students the 2 metre by 2 metre book illustrations that are used created first before being published.
Joly kept the students curiosity by asking them questions, some of which included, “Who do you think chooses the pictures that will be illustrated in the book, the author or the editor” and “how many books do you think are printed in one hour?” Students jumped out of their seats at the chance to correctly answer.
Students also asked questions. One grade 3 student, very intellectually asked, “do you write for your own enjoyment of for the enjoyment of others?” Joly replied in saying, “my aim is to make children happy and for them to enjoy the what I write.”
Another student asked, “how long is the preparation process for writing a book?”
“The preparation takes a long time. Usually about 3 months. The preparation time actually takes longer than the writing process itself,” Fanny replied.
At the end of the presentation, Fanny added one last important detail that had the students roaring with excitement. When asked about her writing and choice of destinations for her investigation/mystery books, she replied “my inspiration comes from places I have visited. For my next book, the characters will visit Istanbul, Turkey.”
